Solar Energy Home

What is a solar energy home? If you are like most Americans, you may dream about never paying another utility bill again. For most of us this is not a reality. Homes run entirely by solar energy make this a reality- in fact, some actually receive a check from the utility provider every month because they generated more electricity than they could consume. Everyone wants a solar powered home, but their are some factors that come into play to determine whether or not this can be a reality.

1. Are you living like you should be on MTV Cribs™ ? Do you have a 60" plasma screen in every room, 5 enormous fish tanks, a refrigerator on each floor, and electronics everywhere you turn? If so, you can kiss the solar energy home goodbye because it would be outrageously expensive. See, many people don't realize that in order to get solar energy working for them in their home, they actually have to cut their energy consumption to only a trickle of use. The home has to be made energy efficient before solar power can even be discussed. If you have large energy drawing appliances such as freezers and refrigerators upstairs and downstairs, and in the garage...these things draw lots of energy, and greatly increase your chances of not being able to effectively use solar energy in your home. So go ahead, and start cutting energy usage...everywhere you can.

2. Your home should be located in such a way that it receives sunlight on solar panels that face south, where they will gather the most sunlight. When you are working with solar energy in your home placement of the panels is optimal. Everything that you can do to ensure that the panels receive the most light possible will help. If you live in a heavily wooded area and you get very little sunlight, then start being more realistic. You need sun and plenty of it to be able to utilize solar in your home.

3. Does your state offer any incentives or rebates for having a solar energy home? Check DSIRE to see what your state, local, utility, and federal incentives that promote renewable energy and energy efficiency may be. Some states offer better incentives than others, and if you are one of those lucky people who live in New Jersey, you may definitely want to investigate some more into a solar home. New Jersey is one of the leading states in solar energy incentives and rebates.

Do be discouraged if you think that solar energy is out of your reach. There are many ways to harness renewable energy, and with the right attitude, determination, and some research....you will be on your way to tearing up your utility bills.
