Amazon.com Product Description
There's nothing like a cooling breeze to keep the hot weather at bay, but sometimes that breeze is nowhere to be found. Enter the Gaiam solar-powered hat fan, which helps keep you cool when temperatures climb. When exposed to the sun, the mini photovoltaic solar panel harvests enough energy to directly power the fan, with no batteries or power outlet required. And the brighter the sun, the more powerful the fan. All you have to do is clamp the fan to your favorite hat--stiffer brims and baseball caps are recommended--and then bask in the sun. The fan is ideal for everything from hiking to gardening to relaxing in cool, eco-hip comfort. Boasting an adjustable mount, the fan measures 2.12 by 2.25 by 2.75 inches (W x H x D). Ten percent of all proceeds from the sale of the solar hat fan is dedicated to sending inner-city kids to Earth Day festivities at the nonprofit Solar Living Institute.

3 out of 5 stars Sun Safari Hat   July 14, 2010
slow breze
I got a sun safari hat as a gift about ten years ago and was very happy with it.It made my lawn work almost fun!I was on my lawn tractor five years ago, went under a low hanging limb,it took the solar off which worked great! Before I knew it I had cut it to bits,so I wired it for just batteries. It worked great and still does, cool breeze, great when U have to four+acres in 95 degree heat! The batteries (2)lasted for a long long time!Well I got a new one on line,I was glad to see the picture on the box because it was the same as my old one,it has the fan blowing directly on your forehead. It cooled top of my head also! The new hat works fine, but it blows more on your face,I liked the old setup better, and the white rather than the brown, white does not get as hot it reflects heat. All in all I happy am happy with both hats.My old hat that am going to still use I gave a 5 out of 5,the new hat gets 3 and a half out of 5.

4 out of 5 stars Unusual application   June 13, 2010

I bought this little gizmo to move air around my electronic outdoor temperature sensor. The morning sun makes the fan turn. It keeps turning as long as the sun shines directly on the solar panel and makes the temperature sensor read accurately. As far as I'm concerned, it works well.

3 out of 5 stars Not for Southern Heat!   December 30, 2008

I purchased this fan with the intent on wearing it for watching sports in the summer in Southeastern North Carolina. The summers here are just unbearably hot!

The fan works just fine. It spins faster with more sun. I just wish the blades were longer and more flexible. If it had the blades like the hand held fans (soft flexible and long), it would probably cool better. The blades are short and rigid. (don't let them hit your forehead - ouch!)

However, as is, this fan doesn't cool very well.

Just OK.

1 out of 5 stars Solar Powered Hat Fan   August 11, 2008

I found this fan to be next to useless in keeping me cool in that it did not generate even the most mild breeze. I truly could not detect any air movement whatsoever. I could not recommend this device for anything other than a science demonstration of converting solar energy into electrical and mechanical energy.
