4 out of 5 stars Zap Portable ReCharger   July 11, 2010

Wow! what a great little product. There are other models out there which are sold by other companies in diff. colors ( black ) which claim to be better. They are all the same item. This one is White made by the same manufacturer. Yes, the black one with silver looks more expensive with better pic. but it's the same exact thing in a diff. color. I was looking for a recharger like this which took AA or AA rechargeable batteries so I could use anything if needed to power this unit. I do a lot of camping / mountain bike riding and if using EVO cell phone as GPS device I needed much more batt. to take with me. I have extra 1500 mAh cell batt. I can take but if you have used GPS nav. you know it sucks the juice. This baby can use 4X 2500 mAH rechargeable batteries giving me 10k mAh for a long day of power consumption without worry. If I some how burn up those batt. I can pop in another 4 - AA and keep on going. Then when I get home or back to vehicle I can recharge those AA rechargeable batt. in my 15 min. Energizer charger if in a hurry and go again. Point is it's as versatile as you need it to be. Some chargers like this use built in battery so in 2-3 yrs. when that batt. will no longer hold a charge you throw it away and buy another where this model just needs AA batt. since it's basically just a batt. holder with USB port. nothing fancy. It has 4 lights and test button so you know batt. level. You only have 1 USB port where some other much more expensive models have 2 ports. For this price you can buy 2 of these and still pay less then the 2 port models. If one fails you still have a back up. If you buy the expensive built in batt. unit and it fails your out of luck. As you can tell by review, I recommend this item vs $75 extra life batt. and other rechargers I found.

The only drawback I've encountered with this gadget is that it will discharge the batteries in the device you're charging if you leave it connected after it's fully charged. It has no diode to prevent this, so this gadget is more suited for powering devices directly, rather than letting them sit for a full recharge. For example, if your MP3 player runs out of juice on the go, and you need a power source for immediate use, this would be perfect. Also, the included batteries are a little weak (1200mAh), but that's easily corrected by installing a new set. So far, I've used this device to charge a Sansa Clip MP3 player, a Motorola Razr cell phone, and a Sanyo SCP2400 cell phone. I'll update this review with more details as I get more use out of it.
