The Times has reported that Defra, the UK environment department, has struck a deal with Ford and Hemcore, a company that specialises in hemp production, to research the possibility of using the material as the basis of car components. <\/p>\n

\n“Defra\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s funding is being used to create new materials based on fibres from hemp and other plants such as flax and willow, to replace metals and oil-based plastics. The fibres are blended with polypropylene and the resulting mixture can then be moulded into whatever shape is required,” the article said.<\/p>\n
The use of such material would make the car more sustainable and easier to recycle.<\/p>\n
