{"id":3073,"date":"2010-10-26T14:30:22","date_gmt":"2010-10-26T18:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.energyrefuge.com\/blog\/?p=3073"},"modified":"2017-09-05T17:52:16","modified_gmt":"2017-09-05T21:52:16","slug":"rise-and-shine-solar-power-gets-bigger-in-the-u-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.energyrefuge.com\/blog\/rise-and-shine-solar-power-gets-bigger-in-the-u-s\/","title":{"rendered":"Rise And Shine: Solar Power Gets Bigger In The U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure id=\"attachment_3075\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3075\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.energyrefuge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/blythe_solar_400x269.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.energyrefuge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/blythe_solar_400x269.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"blythe_solar_400x269\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3075\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3075\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Via Energy.ca.gov<\/figcaption><\/figure>US Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar yesterday approved the construction of the world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s largest concentrated solar power plant with an overall capacity of 1,000MW. in the Mojave desert near Blythe, California. <\/p>\n<p>The 7,025-acre Blythe Solar Power Project will nearly double the country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s solar power output and will power around 300,000 homes, besides saving save one million tons of carbon dioxide per year, it is claimed.<\/p>\n<p>It is the first approval by the US Department of the Interior for a parabolic trough power plant on US public land.<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Blythe Solar Power Project is a major milestone in our nation&#8217;s renewable energy economy and shows that the United States intends to compete and lead in the technologies of the future,&#8221; said Ken Salazar.<\/p>\n<p>Solar Millennium will be in charge of developing the project and has signed a purchase agreement with Southern California Edison (SEC) back in July.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Construction<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Construction of the $6 billion plant is expected to start at the end of 2010 with production estimated to start in 2013. Solar Millenium says the construction phase will generate 1,066 jobs while the plant will employ 295 people permanently.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of environmental impact, the project has caused concerns over the impact it will have on local wildlife. The Mojave Desert is home to the threatened desert tortoise, bighorn sheep and other animals. Other projects in the region have met with fiercer resistance over such <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upi.com\/Science_News\/2010\/10\/20\/Desert-tortoises-could-delay-solar-project\/UPI-63311287616964\/\">concerns<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Projected solar power growth<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Concomitant to this announcement, Bloomberg New Energy Finance issued a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2010-10-25\/solar-energy-can-generate-4-2-of-u-s-power-supplies-by-2020-bnef-says.html\">report <\/a>saying that solar may meet 4.2 per cent of American electricity supplies by 2020 thanks to lower costs that make investments more attractive.
