Via WikiMedia<\/figcaption><\/figure>The EU\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s transport network needs to be nearly 100% carbon-free by 2050, according to a perspective laid out by a commission on future fuels. The European Union is aiming at an overall reduction of 80-95% by that date.<\/p>\n

The stakeholder expert group on future fuels projects that oil will reach depletion by that date, therefore substitution for clean alternatives needs to start soon. The group cites other measures such as improvement of transport efficiency and volume management. <\/p>\n

New fuels should be compatible with current vehicle technology and energy infrastructure, but it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s also necessary to take into account the possibility of disruption caused by system changes when alternative fuels are introduced.<\/p>\n

The group says there is no single candidate for for fuel substitution, but the complexity of the challenge will demand a mix of fuels derived from a variety of primary energy sources. Different modes of transport require fuels with different levels of energy density, such as road freight transport, maritime transport, and aviation<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153If we are to achieve a truly sustainable transport, then we will have to consider alternative fuels. For this we need to take into account the needs of all transport modes\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said transport vice-president Siim Kallas.<\/p>\n
