One of its most outstanding features is that it can last 12 hours, according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.getsolar.com\/blog\/introducing-the-led-solar-pebble\/16821\/?utm_source=feedburner&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_campaign=Feed:+getsolar+(The+Solar+Homes+%26+Solar+Installers+Directory+Blog+|+Getsolar.com)\" target=\"_link\">Get Solar<\/a> blog post.<\/p>\n<p>Portability is also another key feature. The size of a pebble, it can easily moved from a lighting function at home to a battery function in the outdoors.<\/p>\n<p><!--adsense#300--><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/inhabitat.com\/tiny-solar-pebble-can-replace-kerosene-lamps-in-rural-africa\/\" target=\"_link\">Inhabitat<\/a>, the LED solar pebble is a few months away from being commercially released but it will cost about one tenth from what a family would spend on a kerosene lamp, which is highly toxic and lethal in some of the poorest parts of the world. The idea is that units bought in the rich world will help to subsidize for units needed in the poor world.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview published by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthtechling.com\/2010\/04\/shining-light-on-the-solar-pebble-chatting-with-designers-plus-minus-design\/2\/\" target=\"_link\">Earthtechling<\/a>, Robinson highlighted some of the key features of the solar pebble: it is small and easy to transport; it has built-in strap holes so it can be attached to bikes and bags; it features a rugged design for resistance; it is rain and dust proof; the handle doubles as a desk lamp.<\/p>\n<p>He says his company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s involvement with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.energyrefuge.com\">solar design<\/a> started during a partnership with SolarAid, a UK charity that works in rural areas across East and Southern Africa, taking solar energy to schools, community centers and clinics.<\/p>\n<p><!--adsense--><\/p>\n<h3 class='related_post_title'>Related Posts:<\/h3><ul class='related_post'><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.energyrefuge.com\/blog\/charity-brings-solar-power-to-island-community\/\" title=\"Charity brings solar power to island community\">Charity brings solar power to island community<\/a><\/li><\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new design that doubles as a lamp and as a solar charger is much more than just a new technology.
