May is National Bike Month<\/em>, an initiative promoted by the League of American Bicyclists, an organization that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been in operation since 1880 and who\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s also promoting Bike-to-Work Week 2011 from May 16-20 and Bike-to-Work Day on Friday, May 20. Check out their website for events<\/a> that may be taking place near where you live and saddle up.<\/p>\n

Tips<\/strong><\/p>\n

Like any form of transport, cycling involves a certain amount of knowledge and technique to make the experience safer and smoother. So we asked bicycle maker Genesis<\/a> for some tips on how to cycle beautifully. Here\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s what they told us:<\/p>\n

1. Clean and Lubricate Your Chain<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Clean off the grease and give your chain and sprockets a good wipe down with a light lubricant and towel. When they collect dirt and grit your bike not only slows down, but they also wear out much quicker. Keeping your chain clean and lubricated will make your bike go faster and keep your bike working well for longer.<\/p>\n

2. Inspect your Brake Pads <\/strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u201c Squeeze the brakes a few times to make sure they are functioning well. The brake pads should be properly aligned and hitting the rims evenly. Get rid of the junk! Inspect the surface of the brake pads and dig out any bits of sand or metal that may have become embedded.<\/p>\n

3. Examine the Tire Pressure<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c The proper level of air pressure in your tires is often overlooked, but it can make a huge difference! The correct air pressure can accomplish: easier pedaling, protect rims from damage, prolong the life of your tires, and decrease the chance of getting flats.<\/p>\n

4. Get Tightened Up<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Check your bike for any loose screws and blots including the seat, pedals, handlebars, and shifters.<\/p>\n

5. Shine that Frame<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Use mild soapy water to wipe down the bike frame and components starting at the handlebars and working your way back. Remove hardened grime and be on the lookout for cracks or damage in need of repair.<\/p>\n

So get on your bike and pedal away, which is a great way to show respect for the planet, have fun and help reduce the stress-inducing high number of cars on the roads. With Earth Day approaching as well, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s about time to take that green turn<\/a> …<\/p>\n
