The ultimate goal of the projects is to improve the economics and efficiency of cellulosic ethanol, also known as second-generation ethanol, which converts non-food biomass into biofuels as well as bioproducts and biochemicals.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Secretary of Energy Steven Chu said the funding will help diversity the department\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Biomass Program portfolio and include fuels and chemicals beyond cellulosic ethanol.<\/p>\n<p>The projects that received the funding were:<\/p>\n<p><em>General Atomics:<\/em> San Diego, California (up to $2 million)<br \/>\n<em>Genomatica, Inc.:<\/em> San Diego, California (up to $5 million)<br \/>\n<em>Michigan Biotechnology Institute:<\/em> Lansing, Michigan (up to $4.3 million)<br \/>\n<em>HCL CleanTech, Inc.:<\/em> Oxford, North Carolina (up to $9 million)<br \/>\n<em>Texas Engineering Experiment Station:<\/em> College Station, Texas (up to $2.3 million)<br \/>\n<em>Virent, Madison:<\/em> Wisconsin (up to $13.4 million)<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>You should follow us <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/energyrefuge\">here<\/a>.<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class='related_post_title'>Related Posts:<\/h3><ul class='related_post'><li>No Related Posts Found!
