{"id":532,"date":"2008-04-08T06:48:11","date_gmt":"2008-04-08T06:48:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.energyrefuge.com\/blog\/solar-energy-could-power-the-world\/"},"modified":"2017-09-05T17:54:50","modified_gmt":"2017-09-05T21:54:50","slug":"solar-energy-could-power-the","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.energyrefuge.com\/blog\/solar-energy-could-power-the\/","title":{"rendered":"Solar energy could &#8216;power the world&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"right\" src=\"http:\/\/www.energyrefuge.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/world-energy.jpg\">The Press Association writes that Professor Harry Gray, founding director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.its.caltech.edu\/~bi\/\">Beckman Institute at the California Institute of Technology<\/a>, told attendants of the 235th national meeting of the American Chemical Society in New Orleans that &#8220;solar can potentially provide all the electricity and fuel we need to power the planet&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Gray said that the way to achieve that we need to find out how &#8220;to use sunlight efficiently and directly to &#8216;split&#8217; water into its elemental constituents &#8211; hydrogen and oxygen &#8211; and then use the hydrogen as a clean fuel.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There are several challenges to be overcome: reducing costs to make solar competitive against non-renewable sources, developing cheap sollar cells without deterioration and using less toxic materials in the manufacture of these cells.<\/p>\n<p>But with the sunlight that strikes the planet every hour being more than the energy consumed on the planet in one year, solar&#8217;s potential is truly enormous and demands to be pursued.<\/p>\n<p><!--adsense--><\/p>\n<h3 class='related_post_title'>Related Posts:<\/h3><ul class='related_post'><li>No Related Posts Found!
