The Guardian <\/a>newspaper ran a profile of a fascinating woman living in South London that I thought was well worth clipping. 68-year-old Joan Pick hasn’t flown since 1971, hasn’t driven a car since 1973, she only eats raw vegetarian food, washes her own clothes, walks and jogs everywhere and avoids many other trappings set up by consumer society. Can everyone live like that? Probably not, but Pick’s example shows that we can leave a lot of things out of our lives by personal initiative. “They have to almost bribe people to use energy-efficient things”, she complains. “It’s terrible. I adopt a [lifestyle] that is consistent with the sustainable management of the world’s resources. Everyone knows we have to have very severe cutbacks to meet that standard.”<\/p>\n
