Micromax Launches Solar-Powered Cell Phone

Indian cell phone maker Micromax has announced the launch of a unit equipped with photovoltaic cells. The model is called X259 and the company describes it as “functional and efficient”. It features a 2.4” screen, camera, Bluetooth and the option to use two chips.

Micromax says three hours of sun exposure will result in enough battery power for one and half hours of talk. The use of solar power for cell phones could improve the lives of people in India, who are constantly faced with power outages in their country.

“We hope to put an end to cell chargers by inserting a solar panel on the device itself,” said Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma.
