Electric Cars: A Quick Look

electric carsI have been skeptical about electric cars. Battery technology is behind the times and they end up making the car’s production and sales costs very high. They are unable to operate for many hours without recharging. I had thought that the performance would be a compromise, but it turns out that the truth is different.

Electric motors have very few moving parts. As a matter of fact, only one part moves- the rotor, and the only two points of friction are actually very easy to service. Electric motors do have a very stiff power curve, meaning that they have more torque at lower RPMs, and they can be fitted with a very simple transmission with probably 2 or 3 speeds.

Tesla Roadster

tesla electric carThe finest electric car is the Tesla car produced by Tesla Motors. This car can go from 0 to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. It can run 250 miles per charge at a very low cost. I don’t know about the durability of the battery, but this car rocks. The price tag is about $100,000; however, it is expected that Tesla will produce a lower end car, at lower price, once the facilities to manufacture this car in large quantities are available.

The Venturi Fetish

venturi fetishThis was the first electric car, unveiled at the 2002 Geneva International Motor show. This car can reach speeds of a little over 100 miles an hour. It can go approximately 200 miles on a single charge. This car costs a little over half a million dollars..yes that is $500,000!

The Tango

And there is your quick look at some top performing electric cars…
